This very unique Santos cage doll has her head tilted forward - inspired by Our Lady of the Forsaken. This way, "she looks over those who need her", much like the original statue, found in Valencia, Spain.

The history of Our Lady of the Forsaken begins in 1409. The Friar of the cathedral in Valencia, Spain, was walking to church when he noticed boys mistreating a mentally ill person in the streets.  This inspired his sermon to call on all of the faithful to help the poor, the abandoned, the homeless, and the sick. A brotherhood was formed, and a hospice for the mentally ill was formed, which later took on many orphans, who were abandoned as a result of the plague. The statue of Our Lady of the Forsaken was built soon after, by whom many believe to be a group of angels. She was carved from wood in three days, with head leaning over. This hunched position has earned her the affectionate name of la Geperudeta. This statue is transferred through the streets of Valencia each May in a festival to honor her.

This serene cage doll has a body painted of antiqued teal, which complement her auburn hair and eyebrows. Her arms are articulated at the shoulders, elbows and wrists. She has a wooden cage and body, and a resin head and hands, all of which are carefully hand painted and antiqued.

The lady's elbows & hands are jointed, providing her with limited motion/postures.

Variations occur with each handcrafted 'antiqued' Santos. And as is common with antiques, as well as with this reproduction Santos, there may be a 'split' visible on/in her chest (see photo 2) and/or back - the degree of which may vary per Santo. This is where her neck is attached to the body. Traditionally this area is covered with a dress or rosaries (neither are included).

She's approx. 21" tall.
Shoulder to shoulder - 3.75" wide.
Head circumference - 5 7/8".
Base of cage - 5" wide.

This Santos mannequin is part of the Santos Cage Doll Collection, which is exclusively available in the US from SantosCageDoll.com and our family of online stores. She can be shipped worldwide.

Note: Though pictures may show this Santos with wings, a crown, a halo, milagros, and/or other items, these are not included unless specifically mentioned as such. Often, they can be purchased from our store separately.
