As a child, I watched my mother grow her doll collection from the very first piece, to what is now a large estate of antique dolls from around the globe. My interest was more to witness her joy, although the initial discovery of The New Find was always a thrill. It wasn’t until I was all grown up that stumbled upon Santos cage dolls, and I really developed a doll interest of my own. It’s a strange brew of various seasons throughout my life. As a child, I grew up with my mother’s dolls. As an impressionable teenager, I visited Europe and immersed myself in cathedrals, architecture, and curious objects of old, interesting towns that I visited. As an adult, I married a Dutch artist and discovered through him eclectic styles of art and architecture. Each layer of my life has built upon the previous, and the discovery of the European style Santos dolls feels like the natural progression of my life’s path.

We started SantosCageDoll.com to share beautiful reproductions of the antique dolls that are sadly rare to find in mint shape. You can purchase them from us in our store, or simply enjoy the photo gallery. Today’s craft work is used as a distinct and vivid reminder of the 17th and 18th century culture that began the traditional use of the Santos dolls. Even antique doll collectors take exception to the striking beauty of these reproduction Santos. These days created in wood and resin, the dolls are still hand carved, frequently jointed, and assembled and handpainted with extraordinary beauty. We’ve searched and searched to find the cream of the crop, and we are continually looking for more dolls to add to our collection. Look for many new additions throughout the next few months!

Handcrafted workmanship

Variations occur with each handcrafted piece, particularly when being ‘antiqued’.  “Perfectly Imperfect”  is character, and not a flaw. And since the dolls are crafted to appear antique in nature, they may include some of the following: distressed or chipped paint, minor splits in wood, some cracks, variations in paint shade, variations in joint resistance, exposed wood in joints, and other artistic process imperfections, yielding different results on every doll. And, although all dolls of a same model are remarkably close in appearance, there may be signs of aging that are not identical to her ’sisters’.  Additionally, dolls are made by various craftsmen and receive different ‘personal touches’… It’s the beauty of artistic hand made versus robotic machine made.
